When is windshield replacement not needed — and a repair is enough?

I got a stone chip in my windshield and I’m wondering if it can be repaired or if the windshield has to be replaced. What determines whether a repair is enough, and when should you replace the whole windshield?

A small stone chip in the windshield can often be fixed with a repair.

However, if the chip has started to spread or there is a crack in the glass, the windshield needs to be replaced.

In other words, it’s often best to deal with glass damage as soon as possible.
